- As a TEAM Build an Obstacle Course for Ollie
- Successfully Navigate Ollie through your Obstacle Course
Challenge: The boys designed and built an obstacle course for Ollie. Navigating Ollie through the obstacle course proved to be quite a challenge! Even though maneuvering Ollie using the app was frustrating, we had a lot of fun. We all decided to give it another try, and next time we will start off by navigating him through simpler challenges.

Design Studio Club continues for SY 2015-2016! Mrs. Colte and I have 14 boys joining us for clubs this year; we are vastly outnumbered! The students started the year by discussing what they want to make, joining Google Classroom for some community building, and of course collaborating on a design challenge. Students were asked to create the tallest free standing structure they could with the materials in a basket. Each group tried different things. One group began to copy what they saw another group doing...and guess what...@Michelle_Colte told them "in this class it is okay to copy"! We are all learning together, and every idea can be remixed. Variables were added to the challenge, so it was back to the drawing board. Check out the direction Slides here. We look forward to an exciting year of design thinking and tinkering with these kiddos. Check out some clips from our Tallest Structure Challenge in the video below.
Click, click, click....Legos and some small toys came alive today as we explored creating animations. The teachers gave some quick tips for stop motion filming and a brief model of using the Lego Movie Maker iPad app.
Tips: -small movements -when picking up a piece to change it, use a place marker -keep camera in the same position -Potential Lego Movie Maker App Tutorial Playlist of Animations Created: Click to see Final reflections survey results
Studio Club was making the band today, and exploring sound was super AWESOME!
First, we did some inquiry into the question What Makes Interesting Music?
Next,
We split into different bands, and collaborated to create original songs. Enjoy our video below! Today we made musical instruments from recyclables. Students weren't given much direction; they just went for it! Before they began, they were shown some examples on this Presentation and could reference this series of tutorials as well. Most students did not look at the tutorials at all. It was a loud, messy, and all around great experience to see them create rain sticks, box guitars, cocoa can drums, straw flutes, and bottle-made xylophones to name a few. Next meeting, the students will collaborate to create a piece of music using their self-created instruments! See all the pictures from our experience here.
What it looks likeThinking through this project
Sometimes, our ideas are a muddled mess and we work through them to a clear solution.
But other times, solution might not be so clear.
That's okay! We are not in a rush to create this scribble machine. Instead, we want you to try something, test it out, make changes, watch others, try something else. Keep thinking, what next? How could I modify this? What can I do differently? What if I used sidewalk chalk? What if the pens weren't under the container, but next to it? What if my scribble bot became a scribble monster?!

Students' Vlog: Reflection on Scribble Bot Experience
Studio club met for the first time today. Two teachers and a group of fifth graders at the beginning of something....we all came in excited. We watched a bit of Sylvia's Super-Awesome Mini Maker Show and explored DIY. Next we participated in the Marshmallow Challenge to get our design juices flowing. Check out the video below. Try it yourself and see if you can beat our measurements! The only rule of Studio Club is you gotta make something, so the last thing we did this first meeting was brainstorm. What is it that we wanna create? Here were some of our first ideas:
-a fashion t-shirt -art: stained glass -take apart an iPhone and reassemble -take apart a computer and reassemble -make a light-up shirt -3D print of Minecraft skin -emoji and cat pillow -code and print a 3D hotdog -homemade bubble gum -create an archery range in Minecraft Well, you know what they say, every new beginning leads to well AWESOMENESS! I can't wait to see what we create!!! |
we are...A librarian, a tech coordinator, and some fifth graders dreaming out loud. Playing, building, exploring, learning, reflecting....making it happen! Archives
